Deckers Careers Intern Spotlight

Northeastern co-op Spotlight:

Raj Mocherla

Raj is originally from Rochester, New York. After graduating from high school he headed to Boston to attend Northeastern University and study economics and mathematics with a Spanish minor. Raj’s previous co-op was at Johnson & Johnson, where he worked on their e-commerce team. Raj learned that he enjoys all that the online aspects of running a business entails, so he decided to come to Deckers Brands for his second co-op to continue to hone his abilities and expand his knowledge of the e-commerce world.

What would you like to share about your internship experience so far?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Deckers so far! First and foremost, the people have been extremely inviting and friendly. I have had the opportunity to learn merchandising skills and tools that are implementable across several of the brands in the Deckers portfolio, and having that holistic experience has been very rewarding. I am able to see the impact of my work, and any and all new ideas are welcomed. I am excited for the coming months as I continue to grow my skillset and look to make an impact as much as I can.

What has been your favorite part of living in Santa Barbara as a co-op?

Coming from the East Coast, I knew the weather in Santa Barbara would be an immediate perk. I love the consistently warm temperatures, and as a result being able to explore all that Southern California has to offer. Whether it be going to the beach, hiking, heading downtown, or getting on a train for a weekend trip to another nearby city, there is never any shortage of fun to be had.

Who has been an inspirational leader in your professional life? How have they influenced your career goals, passions and interests?

Back at school, I work in the Visitor Center as a Campus Visit Representative, and seeing all of the amazing things my fellow co-workers accomplish during their time at Northeastern is inspiring. As we share our stories with prospective families, I get to be surrounded by some of the most motivated students at our school and hear the incredible research they’ve done, impressive companies they’ve worked for, amazing causes they’ve rallied behind, and so much more. These experiences just demonstrate to me that the sky is the limit and there is no goal too lofty for me to want to achieve in my career. Balancing all of these responsibilities can be a challenge, but being a part of the supportive and driven environment of my co-workers has helped me understand what I want to accomplish across my career and passions, as well as see that my career and my passion may not necessarily have to be two independent things.

What are three fun facts you’d like to share?

1. I’ve flown a plane before.

2. I was born in India.

3. A childhood friend and I create handmade magazine issues for kids undergoing cancer treatment at a children’s hospital in our hometown.
